Travel to Central Asia

About our group trips to Central Asia

Central Asia is one of the world's most mythical regions, where the Silk Road caravan cities, colorful bazaars and vast landscapes tell the story of meetings between East and West. Here, Uzbekistan awaits with its shimmering blue domes in Samarkand and well-preserved Khiva, Kyrgyzstan with snow-capped mountains, yurts and high-altitude lakes, and the opportunity to discover several Central Asian countries on one trip.

Our group tours to Central Asia are suitable for those who want to travel comfortably and safely to places that still feel genuine and relatively undiscovered. Together with knowledgeable tour guides, you will experience historic cities, dramatic mountain ranges, deserts, oases, local meals and meetings with people who keep old traditions alive. Whether you are attracted by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan or a round trip through Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and other countries in Central Asia, a trip full of strong impressions awaits you.

The cities of the Silk Road and the history of Central Asia

For centuries, Central Asia was a hub for trade, ideas and cultures. Along the Silk Road, caravans traveled with silk, spices, gold, ceramics and knowledge between China, Persia, India and the Mediterranean. The traces are still visible in the region's architecture, crafts and urban life. In Uzbekistan, you will encounter some of the most magnificent places on the entire Silk Road. Samarkand impresses with the Registan Square, madrasas, mosaics and blue domes, while Khiva feels like a preserved fairy-tale city with walls, minarets and narrow alleys. Bukhara, which is often included in tours of the country, is another historical gem where mosques, caravanserais and bazaars tell of a time when the city was a center of trade and learning. Traveling here in a group makes the experience both richer and more accessible. With tour leaders and local guides, you will get the context behind the places, the stories of kingdoms and religions, and a deeper understanding of why Central Asia has been so significant throughout history.

Which countries are located in Central Asia?

When talking about the countries of Central Asia, five countries are usually referred to: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. They share a geographical location in the heart of Asia but differ in landscape, language, culture and history. It is precisely these contrasts that make a trip through the region so exciting. Kazakhstan is the largest country in the region and offers vast steppes, modern cities and dramatic natural environments. Kyrgyzstan is known for its mountains, lakes and nomadic traditions. Tajikistan is dominated by high mountains and wild valleys, while Turkmenistan is associated with desert landscapes, distinctive architecture and traces of ancient trading cities. Uzbekistan is perhaps best known for the magnificent cities of the Silk Road such as Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. On our trips, you can either immerse yourself in one country, such as Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan, or join a round trip where several of the countries are combined. This gives a broad picture of Central Asia and shows how the region is both interconnected and surprising with its variety.

Nature experiences from deserts to high mountains

Central Asia is not just history and cities – nature is just as impressive. The region is home to some of Asia's greatest contrasts: dry deserts, lush oases, vast grasslands, snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes. This makes trips here particularly rewarding for those who want to combine culture with magnificent landscapes. In Kyrgyzstan, nature is at the center. Here we travel through valleys and national parks, see red rock formations at Jeti Oguz and encounter the mighty Lake Issyk Kul, whose waters sparkle against the mountains. One of the most memorable experiences is often a stay at Lake Son Kul, high up among open pastures where shepherds and their animals characterize the landscape. Nature also plays an important role in Uzbekistan. Deserts and barren plains spread out between the historic cities, but greenery grows along rivers and in the oases. This alternation between dry and lush, quiet landscapes and bustling cities, is part of the region's strong travel experience.

Food, bazaars and meetings with people

A trip to Central Asia is also about scents, tastes and encounters. In the bazaars, spices, dried fruit, nuts, bread, textiles and handicrafts are stacked in colorful rows. Here you get a close feel for everyday life and the region's role as a trading post throughout history. The food varies between countries but often has roots in nomadic culture and the encounters of the Silk Road. You can taste dishes such as plov, freshly baked bread, grilled meat, soups, dumplings, yoghurt-based specialties and tea, which are served with great hospitality. The meals often become a natural part of the experience, especially when combined with local stories and traditions. In Kyrgyzstan, visits to shepherds and overnight stays in yurts provide an insight into a way of life that is still alive. In the cities of Uzbekistan, you will meet craftsmen, vendors and guides who will share their knowledge of ceramics, silk, carpets and architecture. It is in these encounters that Central Asia is often most memorable.
